News Roundup: Mungyeong’s end-of-season concert, KPFA Charity Match, Jeon Gaeul’s ‘football trip’ to Japan, Korea U-17s

A summary of some recent stories from Korean women’s football, including the WK League, South Korea’s national teams, and opportunities for youth players.

Koyote to perform at Mungyeong Sangmu’s final home match of 2025

With the end of the regular WK League season fast approaching, Mungyeong City have announced the line-up for a celebratory concert to be held before Mungyeong Sangmu’s home match against Gyeongju KHNP this Thursday (2nd October). Ahead of the 3pm kick-off at Mungyeong Civic Stadium, match-goers will be treated to a concert headlined by Koyote, one of Korea’s best-known vocal groups. The line-up also includes Hwang Taeja, a trot singer from nearby Seongju who found fame in the 2019 KBS National Singing Contest, and Jang Hyejin, a fourth grade student at a local elementary school tipped as a rising star in the trot genre. The concert is set to begin at 13:20.

Attendees will also have the chance to win various prizes, including a washing machine, in a raffle. Mungyeong’s home games regularly attract the largest crowds in the WK League, and this will surely be no exception — but it is a shame that the lack of floodlights at the stadium mean this event will take place on a weekday afternoon while many potential matchgoers are at work or school.

2025 KPFA Charity Match scheduled for 13th December

The Korea Pro-Footballers’ Association (KPFA) has announced that the fourth annual KPFA Charity Match will be held at 13:00 on Saturday 13th December 2025. The match is the only event in the Korean footballing calendar where players from both men’s and women’s leagues collaborate and even play together in mixed teams. The KPFA Charity Match also features retirement ceremonies for recently retired players and various events for fans.

Through this match, the KPFA provides support for former football players Shin Youngrok and Yoo Yeonsoo. Former Suwon Samsung and Jeju United player Shin suffered a cardiac arrest during a 2011 K League match, the long-term effects of which ended his football career. Jeju United goalkeeper Yoo was left paralysed from the waist down after the car he was travelling in was hit by a drunk-driver in 2022.

More details, including the venue and how to purchase tickets, will be announced in due course via the KPFA’s social media.

Jeon Gaeul to lead youth players on Japan trip

Retired footballer Jeon Gaeul will lead a group of youth footballers on a ‘football trip’ to Japan in November. Jeon retired from football in 2023 after an illustrious club career that saw her play in leagues in Korea, the USA, Australia and England, and rack up over 100 appearances for South Korea. She now runs a football training centre in Seoul. Earlier this year, she was named as a KWFF ambassador alongside Kim Youngkwang.

The ‘football trip’ is being organised by football periodical Best Eleven and is open to girls in the fifth or sixth grade of elementary school or the first grade of middle school. Jeon will lead the group on a trip to Shizuoka in Japan, where they will take part in a coaching session with professional footballers and play a friendly match with a local youth team. The schedule also features a trip to watch a J1 League match and a Q&A session with Japanese women’s football legend Midori Honda.
