There were plenty of goals to keep WK League fans entertained this weekend, with Incheon Hyundai Steel Red Angels the only team not to score at least one in Round 10. With just four points separating the top five teams, it’s shaping up to be an exciting and hard-to-predict season.
Hwacheon maintain lead with away win at Sangmu
Defending WK League champions Hwacheon KSPO maintained their position at the top of the table with a fifth consecutive win, taking all three points against Mungyeong Sangmu with three goals from three different goal scorers. Sangmu captain Kwon Hahnul got her team a late consolation goal that even she seemed surprised by to make the final score 1-3.
Having started the season strong, military team Mungyeong are suffering a dip in form, with a tough run of fixtures ahead. In contrast, Hwacheon stumbled in the early rounds but now appear unstoppable, although Suwon FC are hot on their heels, and with a match in hand. The two sides will play each other twice in quick succession in July — expect fireworks.
Gyeongju beat Gangjin to climb out of 8th place
Just two rounds ago, Gyeongju were winless, having netted only three goals all season, all of them thanks to Hyun Seulgi. Now, they have ten goals and two wins to their name, their Round 10 victory seeing them climb to the lofty heights of 7th place for the first time since Round 3. KHNP arrived in Gangjin with renewed confidence after claiming their first win of the season earlier in the week, and were leading by two goals when youngster Yang Eunseo scored her WK League debut goal for the Swans late in the second half.
Within seconds of play restarting, Kyokawa netted KHNP’s third with a perfectly placed long-range shot, but a few minutes later Gangjin were awarded a penalty and Son Hwayeon converted from the spot. It was hardly a dominant performance from Gyeongju, but it was enough, and now that Kyokawa has found goalscoring form, the side should be hopeful of picking up more points in upcoming matches.
Suwon expel AWCL demons with decisive win at Incheon
Suwon FC returned to league action for the first time since their AWCL campaign came to a heartbreaking end. This was Suwon’s second trip to Incheon this season, the first one having resulted in a 2-1 win for the Red Angels. The visitors redressed the balance and then some on Saturday, with two goals each from Yoon Soojung and Haruhi Suzuki.
Yoon, who made her WK League debut in 2024 with Changnyeong WFC before signing with Suwon last year, recently received her first senior call-up for South Korea. It’s hard to stand out in a team that features the likes of Ji Soyun and Kim Hyeri, but Yoon has been on top form so far this season and both goals were well deserved. As for Suzuki, scoring against her former team has taken her to the top of the rankings for goals scored this season. This was a rare off-day for Incheon keeper Kim Minjung, and Suwon took full advantage.
Sejong entertain fans with 3-1 home win against Seoul
Sejong Sportstoto hosted Seoul City in front of a lively home crowd in a rare Sunday evening fixture. Kim Jihyun, another player who could make her international debut this week, opened the scoring early, lifting fan’s spirits after their defeat earlier in the week. The mood was briefly dampened by Han Chaerin’s equaliser, but Sportstoto reclaimed the lead in the final seconds of the first half, Kim Jihyun’s corner taking a deflection to land in the back of the net.
Kim scored again in the second half, leaping at the opportunity to tidy up a fumbled save by veteran goalkeeper Kim Jungmi. Seoul did look dangerous at times throughout the match, forcing some impressive goal line clearances from Sportstoto’s defence, not to mention the saves that had Sejong fans chanting Kim Yumi’s name on several occasions. With key midfielder Kim Minji injured, City’s squad looks thinner than ever, and in the end Sportstoto’s relative squad depth played a significant role in this win.
