KFA announces ‘The 8ight’ amateur women’s championship

The tournament will see as many as 80 teams from across the country compete in regional leagues, with the top teams heading to the national finals in Cheonan in November

The Korea Football Association is currently seeking teams to participate in a national 8-a-side amateur women’s football championship supported by funding from the FIFA Women’s Development Programme.

According to the KFA via Instagram, up to 80 teams from across the country could take part in the competition, with regional tournaments set to take place in five locations nationwide throughout the summer and autumn, before the national championship in November.

Amateur football clubs and university club teams are invited to apply to join ‘The 8ight’, with applications closing on Friday, 12th June. Teams must have at least 12 players on the books, with a maximum of two players who have played elite sports at the middle school level or higher. Players currently registered in elite programmes at any level are not eligible.

Regional leagues will take place in Gyeongsang, Jeolla, Gangwon, Chungcheong, and the capital region. Matches will be 8-a-side, playing 25 minutes each way. The top two teams from each region will progress to the national finals at the Korea Football Park in Cheonan from 7th-8th November.

There will be prizes for the top three teams nationally, as well as awards for an individual MVP and top goalscorer. Participating teams will also receive football equipment, all funded by the FIFA Women’s Development Programme, which was renewed and expanded last year in a bid to drive further growth in the women’s game.
