The first round of the first ever W Korea Cup took place this week, with fourteen WK League and WU League teams competing across two venues in Icheon on Tuesday and Wednesday. The seven winning sides will be joined in Round 2 by Hwacheon KSPO, who received a bye as 2025 WK League champions.

As WK League and WU League teams clashed in official competition for the first time, there were no upsets in this round, with Incheon Hyundai and Sejong Sportstoto recording comfortable victories over Daekyeung University and Gangwon State University, respectively. Korea University came closest to achieving the competition’s first ‘giant killing’ in their clash with Seoul City with Jin Hyerin’s second-half equaliser sending the match into extra time, but Kim Minji found a winner for City to snatch their place in the second round.

The tournament’s official opener on Tuesday evening saw WK League teams Suwon FC and Gyeongju KHNP meet for the first time this week — the sides will play each other again tonight in the league. First-half goals from Ayaka Nishikawa and Ji Soyun sealed a routine win for a Suwon side on a seemingly unstoppable run of post-AWCL good form. In the round’s other all-WK clash, Mungyeong Sangmu beat Gangjin Swans 2-0, with goals from Lee Areum and Kim Taeyang.

Elsewhere, Ulsan College beat Dankook University and Uiduk University beat Daeduk University. Having avoided being drawn against a WK League side in Round 1, Ulsan and Uiduk are now the only two WU League teams left in the competition. Round 2 is scheduled to take place from 24th-25th August, also in Icheon. There will be a draw ahead of the round to determine who will play against whom.
