The second round of the first ever W Korea Cup took place this week in Icheon, with WK League sides Suwon FC, Incheon Hyundai Steel Red Angels, Sejong Sportstoto, and Seoul City Amazones progressing to the semi-finals.

On Monday, an Incheon side that hasn’t won in the league since 20th June beat Mungyeong Sangmu 2-1 in the first match of the round at Icheon Sports Complex. Sangmu, on course for one of the most successful seasons in their history, took an early lead thanks to Kim Hyejung, but Incheon’s Namgung Yeji equalised before the break. The score remained at 1-1 as the match rolled into second half stoppage time, but Namgung claimed her second just in the nick of time to secure a much-needed win for the Red Angels.

Later in the evening, Sejong Sportstoto were dominanat against Uiduk University, the only college team remaining in the competition after Ulsan College forfeited their second round fixture against Seoul City. Sportstoto scored six goals, all from different goalscorers, and kept a clean sheet to progress to the semi-finals with ease.

Tuesday’s only game saw WK League heavyweights Hwacheon KSPO and Suwon FC take to the pitch. A goal from Hwacheon’s Choi Jungmin put the reigning WK League champions in the lead going into the break, but Suwon fought back, firing home three goals late in the second half to put an end to KSPO’s hopes of cup glory.

The semi-finals are scheduled to take place in Icheon on Sunday 11th October, ahead of the final on Saturday 21st November.
