Suwon’s winning streak brought to an end by vengeful Gyeongju

Suwon have won six consecutive matches since returning to league action after the conclusion of their AWCL campaign, but the run came to an end at Castle Park on Friday

Suwon FC’s winning streak was brought to an end on Friday evening by Gyeongju KHNP as the rival sides met for the second time in just four days. Gyeongju’s victory has been dubbed an act of revenge following their W Korea Cup Round 1 defeat at the hands of Suwon last Tuesday.

With Seoul’s home match against Hwacheon postponed until September due to the W Korea Cup, the ‘re-match’ between Suwon and Gyeongju was the only WK League fixture on Friday evening. Suwon FC came into it having won six league games on the bounce, scoring 23 goals and conceding only two since the disappointing end to their AWCL campaign.

A seemingly unstoppable Suwon knocked KHNP out of the cup on Tuesday, and even had the home advantage on Friday against a Gyeongju side that had a disastrous start to the 2026 season and, ahead of this round, was still sitting in seventh place in the table, yet to record a win at home this year.

Park Namyeol’s KHNP are, however, on a run of excellent form away from home. In fact, since their first win of the season away at Sejong in Round 9, they have won all of their away matches. Friday’s victory over Suwon was Gyeongju’s fifth consecutive win on the road, and it saw the side jump from seventh to fourth in the WK League standings, level on points with Mungyeong and Sejong but with a better goal difference.

Gyeongju’s leap up the table is certainly eye-catching, but there is a caveat: at what should be the conclusion of the season’s second round robin, the halfway point in the 2026 WK League, KHNP are one of only two teams to have played all fourteen fixtures. With a whole host of postponed matches set to be played over the summer, KHNP still have a mountain to climb if they hope to be anywhere near playoff contention by the end of the season.

Despite the loss, Suwon FC remain at the top of the table with 27 points, but the result is welcome news for second-placed Hwacheon KSPO, who are now just two points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

Elsewhere in Round 14: Mungyeong Sangmu, on a losing streak after a majestic start to the season, looked set to take an important victory over Incheon Hyundai, but the points were shared after Fiona Worts’ injury-time equaliser. Gangjin Swans avoided a seventh consecutive loss, holding Sejong Sportstoto to a 0-0 draw at Gangjin Yongrang Football Field.

The Round 14 match between Seoul and Hwacheon was postponed due to the W Korea Cup and will be played on Monday, 14th September at 19:00.
